GRIT EXPLAINED:
Grit is a powerful asset anyone can attain but most can’t maintain. Those with grit persevere through tough times and work through challenges as if there was never another way. Grit is about combining a no-quit tenacity with a big-picture mindset that’s unfettered by perceived set-backs along the path.
GRIT IN-PRACTICE:
Grit often shows up in difficult team and resource decisions. At one of our major manufacturing companies, the CEO had to make a tough decision about a long-time employee that was not a core value fit. The position was critical, so moving on from the experienced employee was not an easy decision.
Instead of putting up with the non-core value fit, the CEO made the decision to move the person out from the team. At the time of the decision, there was no replacement or option available to fill the role.
So what did the CEO and other members of his team do? They showed grit by figuring out how to cover for the position and duties until another team member could learn the role.
The CEO knew that if the non-core value fit had stayed on and nothing was done, the culture for the entire team would have been tarnished.
Taking on the vacant duties wasn’t easy, but the team figured out a way. The best part? An internal employee that stepped up to learn the role was provided with a life-changing opportunity to advance his career at a job the employee says is challenging and has him loving what he does.
