The Fit Check: Culture is Strategy

“Culture is strategy.”

I've been saying this phrase a lot lately. It’s short, but it’s loaded with meaning for me. The more I live it, the more I see how true it is. Not just in business, but in life.

When most people think of strategy, they think about plans, goals, or tactics. They think about where we’re going and how to get there. But here is the cold hard truth: if you want to build something great, none of that matters if the culture is broken. A plan on paper doesn’t drive results, people do. And people act out of the culture they’re in.

In a bad culture, you see fear, silos, finger-pointing, and people protecting themselves instead of the mission. Sometimes this is obvious to see, and other times people are good at hiding it. In a great culture, you see trust, openness, accountability, and people running toward problems together. The difference is night and day.

And here’s the part about this that that really makes it mean something to me: when you work in a culture where trust is real and people genuinely care about each other, it doesn’t just change your work. It changes your life.

When my work environment is healthy, I don’t carry stress and frustration home. I walk through the door with more energy. I’m fully present, lighter, and genuinely happier. At home I show up as a better husband and dad; simply a better version of myself. It's lifechanging.

I want the same for you, and that's what we are trying to build every single day. It's not easy, and yes, some people may not always fit. But when I say “culture is strategy,” I’m not trying to sound clever. I mean it. It’s the core of everything we do. Because when you build a culture of trust, honesty, and accountability, people don’t just perform better at work, they show up at home better, too. And that, to me, is success.

And that’s still not the full weight of this phrase for me. I haven’t even mentioned profit yet. That doesn’t mean it isn’t important, it absolutely is. We have to be financially successful to fund the lifechanging opportunities we want to create for everyone. But we don’t lead with profit when we talk or make decisions. Why? Because if we put culture first and ensure we surround ourselves with great people who all love what they do and hold each other accountable, the results will follow. That’s why, at the end of the day, Culture is Strategy.

One Story

When Satya Nadella took over as CEO of Microsoft, the culture was sharp-edged. Smart people, great products, but a lot of internal competition, silos, and stress. He wanted something better. Not just better performance, but a better way of working. One built on empathy, curiosity, and trust.

He started making small changes. Encouraging teams to share, not compete. Treating mistakes as learning moments. Creating space for people to speak up, not just execute. Over time, the culture shifted. People collaborated more. The company got stronger.

And when you build a culture that’s actually human, one where people can grow and be themselves, you don’t just build a better company. You become a better version of yourself.

When you have a good strong culture its noticeable. You see it, feel it, and live it. When the culture is not so good, its sometimes blatantly obvious, but other times it hides. As humans, we don’t want to acknowledge a less-than-ideal situation, so we don’t go searching for them. But remember this: if the culture is not great, it’s because of someone.
